The Fabric of Home - a slow stitch online workshop

Hi Rebekah,
thanks so much for the totally absorbing workshop this morning. The time went SO quickly, I was obviously enjoying it so much. And what a lovely, interesting little group of ladies! I do hope you enjoyed teaching us as much as I enjoyed the class.

If you were unable to attend my in-person workshop at The Fabric of Home exhibition, you now have the opportunity to join online.

What does home mean to you? Is it a feeling of warmth and protection, a place filled with memories, or something more elusive? In this workshop, we’ll explore the concept of home through textile art, using slow stitching techniques to reflect on themes of safety, family, and shelter.

We’ll start with a brief talk about the quilts in The Fabric of Home and the important research that inspired them, exploring the effects of housing insecurity on families. Then, drawing inspiration from the exhibition, we’ll work with repurposed domestic fabrics—bedsheets, clothing, and scraps that carry stories of their own. I’ll guide you through techniques like sashiko boro, appliqué patching, and decorative embroidery, helping you create a meaningful hand-stitched piece.

You’ll leave the session with a small piece of textile art that will be a personal reflection of home.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Fabric scraps, try to include some repurposed pieces from clothing, bedding, tea towels etc.

  • A small amount of wadding if you wish to make a mini quilt.

  • Needles and pins

  • Threads in various colours

  • Embroidery hoop if needed

  • Scissors

  • A removable fabric pen

No prior experience is needed—just bring your curiosity and your sewing kit!

This workshop will take place via Zoom. A link with instructions on connecting will be sent to you before the class.

TIMES STATED ARE UK (BST). Please check the correct time in your timezone.

You’ll receive a detailed guide to help you prepare your materials and resources at least one week ahead of the live class.

The workshop will be recorded and emailed to participants 24-48 hours after the presentation.

Refunds can only be issued if we can fill the workshop place. If you cannot attend, then there may be a possibility to move you to another class, but this cannot be guaranteed.

Thank you Rebekah, for today’s workshop. I truly enjoyed walking through what “home” means to us. Home looks so different for everyone. Some living in houses, some live on boats (that was us for a long while) and some live in alternate accommodations (shelters, with friends/family, etc).

Exploring our concepts of home, make new friends, learn new stitching and the art of dying fabrics was a great way to spend an early Saturday morning!

I’m excited to attend another one of your workshops! They are worth getting up at 2 am for!
