The Tactile Scroll | A One-Hour Workshop In Slow Stitching

Wednesday 28th October 9:00 am GMT OR 17:00pm GMT. Check the correct time in your timezone here

Discover the pleasure of creating a small, portable textile scroll using fabric scraps, simple hand stitching and a little imagination.

In this relaxed, one-hour online workshop, we’ll explore how to bring together lengths of fabric, found materials and scraps of cloth to create a tactile piece of textile art that you can continue to develop over time.

Using simple running stitch, we’ll layer and attach fabrics, play with colour and texture, and explore ways of wrapping our work around a twig, wooden spool or another found object.

There’s no pattern to follow and no finished design to aim for. Instead, we’ll work intuitively, allowing the fabrics to guide us as we stitch, layer and discover what happens.

These little scrolls are just as lovely to handle as they are to make. You can unroll them, run the fabric through your fingers, add to them over time or simply enjoy having a small, tactile object to return to whenever you need a creative pause.

What We’ll Explore

  • Creating a tactile scroll using fabric scraps and simple running stitch.

  • Layering fabrics and playing with colour, texture and found materials.

  • Working intuitively without a fixed plan or finished outcome.

  • Developing a portable textile practice that you can return to whenever you feel like stitching.

What You’ll Need

  • Fabric: A selection of scraps in different textures and thicknesses. Sheer fabrics are lovely for layering, allowing colours and textures to show through one another. You could use linen, cotton, silk, old clothing or whatever you have in your stash.

  • A base fabric: A longer strip of fabric to form your scroll. Keep it small so that it’s easy to carry around. My own scroll is approximately 10 cm wide.

  • Thread: I use Perle cotton No. 8, but embroidery thread works beautifully too. Use whatever you have to hand.

  • Basic sewing supplies: A needle and scissors.

  • Something to wrap it around: A twig, wooden spool, peg or another small found object. You could also use a strip of ribbon or simply tear a narrow strip of fabric to tie your scroll together.

There’s no need to buy anything special. This is a lovely opportunity to explore your existing fabric stash and give those small, treasured scraps a new purpose.

Who Is It For?

This workshop is suitable for beginners and more experienced stitchers alike. You don’t need any previous experience of textile art, just a willingness to experiment and enjoy the process.
